Annie Powell, founder and President of the World Skin Project, has dedicated her life to raising skin cancer awareness and teaching massage and bodywork professionals how to recognize the signs of skin cancer. While recognizing potential cancerous cells is extremely important, compassionate communication with clients regarding the subject is a skill that often goes a long way in encouraging further action. After an early scare with irregular moles which progressed in to a treatable malignant melanoma, Powell believed that her problems were behind her until years later, when an instructor at Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy suggested that she consult a dermatologist regarding another suspicious mole, which turned out to be stage III malignant melanoma. Many months and painful surgeries later, Annie realized that she could use her experience as a way to bring attention to the ways that massage therapists can act as a front line against skin cancers by focusing on education, early detection, prevention and awareness.
